Helsinki, «the Pearl of the Baltic» and Finland’s capital, is an international city of magnificent architecture – of which the «New Opera» is just one example. If you are interested in books, be sure to visit Akateeminen Kirjakauppa, the largest book store in Scandinavia, designed by Alvar Aalto. You might like to relax over a cup of coffee in one of the many cafés in the Kauppatori square. Did you know that the Finns drink more coffee than anyone else in the world – around nine cups a day!

Finnish architecture and design is characterized by natural materials and simple lines. Significant names in the field include the aforementioned Alvar Aalto of course, as well as Eliel Saarinen, who has designed the main railway station in Helsinki, and whose influence lies in Art Nouveau. Others include Kalevala Koru, who designs modern pieces of jewellery which are strongly influenced by Viking culture, and Marimekko, who is known for broad striped textiles and functionalism.

In Naantali you can visit Mumin World and see the well loved characters created by author Tove Jansson. Although they are great favourites with children, the Mumins have much to teach us about the way we live and interact. Finnish children start their musical education at a tender age, which might be one of the reasons that the Finns have so much to offer musically. From the celebrated composer Sibelius to modern names such as the conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. One musical festival follows hot on the heels of another, covering everything from classical music to rock. Saunas have a deep rooted tradition in Finland. They are often to be found on the shores of one of the many lakes, making it easy to pop out for a refreshing dip. There are some 1.2 million saunas in Finland – be on the lookout for the «savusauna» signs, that way you will avoid the newer «electric» version and experience a genuine steam sauna!

Welcome to Finland!
